A hemolytic reaction is your body fighting blood of the wrong type. It is no infection, so nothing grows or spreads: it starts when a transfusion with more than 175 ml of wrong blood ends, drains blood for a fixed time and then stops by itself.

How to avoid it

Test both blood types with a blood test kit first; O negative is safe for everyone.

Good to know

  • More than 75 ml of wrong blood already knocks you out when the transfusion ends.
  • Wrong blood adds nothing to your blood — the bag is wasted.
  • Germs in the bag reach you either way, matching blood or not.
  • 0− blood suits everyone, and AB+ can take every type. Test with a blood test kit first.
